CRIMSON SIREN

Stand out this season with head-turning lengths shaded with sultry scarlet! Whether you dip your lengths in ruby or try cherry-hued highlights, these crimson coifs are sure to get your blood pumping…

RUBY SWIRL

A vibrant fringe paired with a combination of sleek and curly textures, fashioned by Charcelle Wilson of Pretty Iz Hair Salon in Oxon Hill, MD, form one bangin’ profile. Use a flat iron to gently curl lengths in the front, then spritz with holding spray. Wrap hair at night to keep the style fresh and fabulous.

GARNET GIRL

You’ll be dynamicflaunting ultra-sleek strands like the tresses of this red-hot bob, styled by Evie Johnson of E&E Hair Studio in Largo, MD. The snip’s blunted lines and smooth texture give all the attention to the spotlight-stealing hue. Once you flat-iron the chin-length tresses, you’ll be feeling hot, hot, hot!

CHERRY TENDRILS

Timeless locs drenched in hues of gold, crimson and bronze (designed by Rashema Duncan of Under The Sun Hair Studio in Washington DC), celebrate the beauty of a Natural coiffure. Long golden locs are coiled and tumbled over one shoulder, while a touch of locs imbued with cinnamon highlight the look.

STAR STYLE INSPIRATION

Wanna Say songstress and Vampire Diariesstar Kat Graham pumps up a sleek ponytail with a punch of deep red. Wrapping one scarlet-shaded lock around the elastic adds a chic feel to the updo.
TIP OF THE MOMENT

Of all haircolors, red tends to fade the quickest. Help rejuvenate your red profile in-between salon visits by applying a closely matched semi-permanent hue to your strands. Purchasing products specially formulated to prolong the life of ruby haircolor is also a must for keeping your high-drama look haute.

Braids & Natural

Look of the Month

Hair pro Maria Thompson of Twist & Curves in West Hartford, CT, demonstrates how to fashion an amazing loc upsweep…

Step 1

Begin this look by setting locs on pipe cleaners to achieve stunning spirals. Once the ringlets are set, take out the pipe cleaners and divide the locs up into smaller sections so they can be flat-twisted around the crown—moving from one side to the other side.

Step 2

When flat twisting locs, make sure that one strand is left loose to help secure the final updo. That loose loc is wrapped around the rest of the locs twice to create a ponytail, then secured with a bobby pin to help hold the upsweep in place.

Step 3

Be sure to insert the bobby pin in an upward direction to avoid scalp irritation. Also, try using a covered elastic band to secure the ponytail into a pompadour, while the rest of the ponytail can be tucked under and secured with a broach to help go from day to night.

Step 4: Finish

Protect these gorgeous upswept locs by wearing a satin bonnet at night to help the look last for up to a month. The locs can also be taken down and worn in the spirals that were created using pipe cleaners. Talk about a flexible and fun style!

STAR STYLE INSPIRATION
Shanola Hampton

When the stunning actress Shanola Hampton isn’t captivating us in her role as Veronica, the fun and feisty sister on Shameless, she is dazzling us with her long, luscious locs. Shanola has rocked her Natural for almost 15 years and loves the versatility they bring her. “People think that when you have locs that it’s one style, but you can do anything that you do with any other person’s hair it’s just going to have a different look.”

Trend Of The Moment COLOR SPOTLIGHT

Update your coiffure with an application of well-placed yet stunning color—try the bang area for a small shade pop or wind delicate hues throughout your entire profile—either way, get ready to go glam!

DYNAMIC DIVA

Strike envy into the hearts of your best girlfriends with this simply stunning faux ‘Hawk coiffure. Natural midnight strands are given a glossing treatment while the bang area shimmers with hues of red, blonde and copper to create a pretty swirl of color.

CINNAMON SPARKLE

Earn more than your fair share of admiring glances with this elegant coiffure, illuminated with cinnamon highlights interspersed through the crown. To create the coif hue, chocolate and scarlet human hair extensions are bonded to a wig cap and razor-cut to give the snip an edgy feel.

HIGH & MIGHTY

Walk your own runway with this faux ‘Hawk inspired snip with a splash of auburn highlights upfront. To add dimension to the choppy snip, highlights are applied using a five-star technique, where the hair is sliced in every other section into a star shape before the color is applied.

STAR STYLE INSPIRATION

Denise Vasi steals the spotlight as “Raquel Lancaster” in VH1’s Single Ladies styling ombre haircolor that starts flows down her lengths. Shades start with a deep cinnamon brown at the crown and transitions to golden blonde.

TIP OF THE MOMENT

Not sure where to place your color spotlight? Think of it this way: Where do you want attention to be drawn? Bangs shaded a hip hue will have all eyes on you while a shot of color along the tips calls out your cut’s movement and shape. And, positioning color to frame your face never fails to flatter and “illuminate” your gorgeous fea
